About TMR

I've played hockey my entire life and have always been a die hard Rangers fan. Now that I'm done chasing the dream, I play in a few beer leagues but it just isn't the same as the glory days. I started this blog a little over a year ago and it has since evolved into something I really enjoy. Do I one day aspire to be a professional sports writer? Possibly. My dream job is being a general manager of a professional hockey team. My mood is hopelessly attached to whether the Rangers win or lose on a given night. I despise Sidney Crosby, loathe Martin Brodeur, and think Ricky Dipietro uses more hair products than any man should ever use. My name is Ryan McFadden and I am the editor of The Manic Ranger blog. Be sure to comment whether you like what I have to say or not. I can be reached by e-mail at tmrangerblog (at) gmail.com

Sources tell Sportsnet that theOttawa Senators have traded disgruntled all-star Dany Heatley to the Edmonton Oilers for Andrew CoglianoDustin Penner and Ladislav Smid.

The Senators would have needed to pay Heatley a $4 milllion bonus at 12:01 am ET on July 1.

Well thats that. Heatley would have been great in New York. Only time will tell if Sather made the right call sticking to his guns and keepind Brandon Dubinsky who would have tipped the scales in the Rangers favor along with Nik Zherdev. At least in my opnion anyways. Even then, the Sens in the end didn't get a kings ransom for Heatley. They got a bad contract and two average young players. Andrew Cogliano is the center piece of this deal, that tells the whole story. The Sens didn't receive any 1st round picks, no high level prospects and no big impact players.

Lets hope Sather doesn't make any record breaking bad decisions in free agency tomorrow.

~UPDATE~

Not so fast. Heatley still has not waived his no trade clause according to Darren Millard's Twitter. Talk about a crazy twist if Heatley blocks the trade. Does he really have the cajones to do that?

~UPDATE (2) ~

Now, it gets interesting.

Dany Heatley did not waive his no-movement clause before midnight eastern to facilitate an agreed-upon trade between the Ottawa Senators and Edmonton Oilers that would have sent Andrew Cogliano,Dustin Penner and Ladislav Smid to Ottawa.

For now, and quite possibly forever, the deal is dead.

It gets interesting because while Heatley could change his mind at some point, the Senators are now responsible for a $4 million signing bonus payment that is due to Heatley on July 1. That is expected to greatly change the dynamic of any trade talks involving Heatley.

In other words, the price just went up if the Sens hope to recoup the money in the form of unloading contracts they don't want. Cash cannot change hands in an NHL transaction and the CBA does not allow the transfer of cash payments already made.

TSN just reported that the 4 million signing bonus doesn't take effect until midnight WEDNESDAY night. The That means the Sens still have 24 hours to trade Heatley.
