About TMR

I've played hockey my entire life and have always been a die hard Rangers fan. Now that I'm done chasing the dream, I play in a few beer leagues but it just isn't the same as the glory days. I started this blog a little over a year ago and it has since evolved into something I really enjoy. Do I one day aspire to be a professional sports writer? Possibly. My dream job is being a general manager of a professional hockey team. My mood is hopelessly attached to whether the Rangers win or lose on a given night. I despise Sidney Crosby, loathe Martin Brodeur, and think Ricky Dipietro uses more hair products than any man should ever use. My name is Ryan McFadden and I am the editor of The Manic Ranger blog. UPDATED, 5:31 P.M.: I’ve been told that Heatley is coming to the Rangers tonight. Not sure what the Rangers are giving up to get him, but they can fit him under the cap now.

Well Big Rick has retracted his previous post. According to him Edmonton looks to be the front-runner and the Rangers appear to be done for the night. I still don't think a deal will get done with Edmonton. Nik Zheredv is much more appealing than the more expensive and less productive Dustin Penner. We'll know by midnight tonight if the Rangers are serious about Heater.

Now it sounds as if the Rangers are done for the night—I was wondering why they had the Glen Sather conference call so early. And if they are done for the night, that probably means they are done in the dealing for Dany Heatley.

Earlier I said it looked like it was getting done. Apparently what I was actually hearing but not comprehending was the Gomez deal going down. Sorry about that.

But once Ottawa makes that $4 million bonus payment to Heatley, I’m pretty sure there is no reason for the Senators to trade him … or to do it any time soon. So I assume the Sens will make a deal with Edmonton or some other team by midnight tonight.

And, again, Glen Sather should be applauded if he refused to give in on one of his valued younger players in a deal for Heatley when he had Ottawa over a barrel. With the cap space he opened up by dealing Gomez, Sather can be a player in free agency today and get some offense without giving up anything.

Or he can get something better than Heatley (Vinny Lecavalier?) with those assets.

Maybe I’m misreading this, too. Maybe it’s possible the Rangers will reimburse the Senators for the $4 million if they can get a deal done another time. But I think Ottawa will trade Heatley tonight, and now I think he won’t be coming to New York

According to Bob McKenzie, Ottawa is actually interested in Dustin Penner so the argument that Zherdev is more appealing might not be the case for Bryan Murray.

Well since McKenzie was right about Gomez and the Habs, some weight has to be put on that. I'm not sure I understand why they like Penner more. He's more expensive, has a long contract, and hasn't been very effective.

major bummer....if the rangers could have gotten heatley for zherdev, rozival and a couple picks, the money for heatley would have offset with roz/zherdev contracts and they still could have used the gomez money to get hossa, gaborik, cammillari, or havlat

plus wouldn't a line of heatley callahan and dubinsky be pretty cool?

I'll be pretty upset if the Rangers go for Hossa, Cam, or Havlat. Unless Gab signs a one year deal, no thanks.

I still think they're in on Heatley.

good point that they still might be in on heatley.....doesn't make sense not to keep trying for him if he's exactly what they need.....i'll be upset if they throw buckets of money at hossa and havlat, or a 35+y/o like kouivu....but cammalleri wouldn't be that bad and gaborik would be great at a one or even two year deal.......i still want heatley tho
