About TMR

I've played hockey my entire life and have always been a die hard Rangers fan. Now that I'm done chasing the dream, I play in a few beer leagues but it just isn't the same as the glory days. I started this blog a little over a year ago and it has since evolved into something I really enjoy. Do I one day aspire to be a professional sports writer? Possibly. My dream job is being a general manager of a professional hockey team. My mood is hopelessly attached to whether the Rangers win or lose on a given night. I despise Sidney Crosby, loathe Martin Brodeur, and think Ricky Dipietro uses more hair products than any man should ever use. My name is Ryan McFadden and I am the editor of The Manic Ranger blog. Be sure to comment whether you like what I have to say or not. I can be reached by e-mail at tmrangerblog (at) gmail.com

The Rangers Are Talking Trade With The Senators For Dany Heatley

Darren Dreger (TSN) on the radio today said that 3 teams are currently in the hunt for Dany Heatley: The Rangers, Sharks and Oilers.

So it seems the answer to my question of whether or not Sather will even talk to the Sens about Heatley has beenanswered. Yes. I've said it plenty of times before, but this is the perfect situation for the Rangers. They are in a great position to acquire the key player they so desperately need for an affordable price. Everything is working against Bryan Murray and the Sens.

1) They don't have much leverage at the draft with the $4 million that Heatley is owed hanging over their heads.

2) That sum will immediately eliminate a number of teams from pursuing him until after July 1st when the amount is to paid to Heatley.

3) There is the limited number of teams which Heatley will accept a trade too.

4) The number of potential trading partners dwindles even further as some are not willing to take on a large contract during this economy.

When an opportunity of this magnitude presents itself, it is too good to pass up. There are plenty of naysayers out there who are too blind to realize the basic economics of the situation. But until after July 1st (and even still) Dany Heatley will not return equal value for the Senators. Unless a GM decides to overpay in this situation, a Zherdev, Rozsival, 1st round pick, Michael Sauer/Corey Potter/Dane Byers deal could be enough to get a deal done.

The only team that could possibly stand in the way of the Rangers getting a deal done with the Sens is the LA Kings who can put together a much more enticing package than the Rangers (or anyone else for that matter). The assets they have availabe for trade are superior with Jack Johnson, Alexander Frolov and the 5th overall pick. Although I do not think they would be willing to part with their 1st rounder. Not only do the Kings have better traiding pieces, but they also have cap space readily available for Heatley's large contract. The Kings do have other options though as they can pursue Marian Hossa or Marian Gaborik in free agency.

JJ, Frolov > Zherdev, Rozsival, 1st
